Geney

Geney is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Geney situated at an altitude of 372 m above sea level, 4 km north-northwest of L' Isle- sur -le- Doubs and about 18 km west of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in a hollow in the hills north of Doubstals, on the western edge of the Mont du Bois des Roches.

The area of ​​4:33 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the hills north of Doubstals. The central part of the area occupied by the depression of Geney which is on average 370 m. It is partly consisted of arable and meadow land, partly by forest. There are no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground of the Causse. To the south leads a dry valley on the catchment area of the river Doubs. The boundaries of the plateau of Geney in the west of the amount of Accolans and on the east by the wooded ridge of the Mont du Bois des Roches, in the 464 m, the highest point reached by Geney.

Neighboring communities of Geney are Courchaton in the north, Onan in the east, and Étrappe Mancenans in the south and Accolans in the West.

History

The area around Geney was probably cleared in the 12th century by monks of the Cistercian monastery Lieu- croissant and reclaimed. In the Middle Ages Geney belonged to the rule Granges, which came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Today Geney is part of the municipal association Communauté de communes des Isles du Doubs.

Attractions

In the village church is a wooden statue of Christ from the 17th century, which had been part of the equipment of the monastery Lieu- croissant.

Population

With 149 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Geney is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 246 persons were still counted ), small fluctuations were recorded since then only.

Economy and infrastructure

Was Geney until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are few jobs in the village. The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from L' Isle- sur -le- Doubs after Courchaton. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 13 km. Further road links exist with Onan, Mancenans and Accolans.
