Arcey (Doubs)

Arcey is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Arcey is located on 375 m, about 11 km west of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the western part of the plateau, which is nestled in the rolling landscape between the river valleys of the Doubs River in the south and Ognon in the northwest, south of the height of the Bois d' Arcey.

The area of ​​12:57 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the gently undulating countryside north of Doubstals. The central part of the area is occupied by the plateau of Arcey, which is on average 370 m. It has a width of four miles and a length of about five kilometers and is mainly consisted of arable and meadow land. The whole area shows no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground of the Causse. There are various karst phenomena, especially shafts, including the Chasm du Trou aux Chiens. The plateau is bounded on the south by the hills of Bois du Chanet (425 m) and Bois du Combollet ( to 460 m ) to the west from the high plateau of the Hautes -Roches and in the north by the ridge of the Bois d' Arcey, on the 490 m the highest elevation of Arcey is achieved.

Neighboring communities of Arcey are Saulnot, Villers -sur- Saulnot and Désandans in the north, Saint- Julien- lès -Montbéliard and Sainte -Marie in the east, the south and Montenois Onan and Gémonval in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Arcey belonged to the rule Granges, which came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. When invasion of the troops under King Louis XIV in the Franche -Comté in 1674 the village was set on fire. Together with the Franche -Comté Arcey came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Arcey is part of the municipal association Communauté de communes de la Vallée du Rupt.

Attractions

The Church of Saint-Privat was built in 1854. Before that are a cross of red sandstone in the 18th century and four Calvaires. The Chapel of Notre- Dame de la Grêle also consists of red sandstone.

Population

With 1417 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Arcey one of the smaller communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886, 706 were still counted ), a striking population growth was recorded since the early 1960s. Since then, the population has nearly tripled.

Economy and infrastructure

Arcey was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises as well as various shops of retail. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the agglomeration Montbéliard.

The village has good transport links. It lies on the main road N83, which runs from Besancon to Belfort. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 15 km. Further road links exist with a beard, and Saulnot Montenois.
