Geographical Location
Barley is located about 12 kilometers east of the Ems and the Dortmund- Ems Canal between Lingen and Haselünne.
Neighboring communities
Neighboring municipalities are in the north of the city Haselünne, in the east the municipality Lengerich, in the south the municipality Langen and to the west the town Bawinkel.
History and Ortsnamenherleitung
Gersten ( old: Giureston 890, Gerustan ) is mentioned very early in Werden register. To 890 had Thiatgrim and Redwin per 15 bushels of corn, 16 denarii army shillings and two measures of meal to be delivered. The latter was said to be a particularly valuable performance because grinding in mills, was very difficult. Residents Gerstens should be migrated from East Frisia (Source: Teacher of the Diocese of Osnabrück 1905). According to H. Bahlow the name is synonymous with Garst = spoiled, rancid, rotten; compare Old Norse. gerstr = septic water, brackish water.
