Geography

Gutenberg is located on the Raabklamm in the district of Weiz in the Austrian province of Styria. In 1952, the community created by the merger of the cadastral Garrach and small Semmering.

  • Small Semmering ( 757)

The municipality comprises the cadastral Garrach and small Semmering.

Geology

The territory of Gutenberg is belonging to two tectonic ceiling positions. Firstly, the Oberostalpinen ceiling floor in the north and on the other the Middle East Alpine ceiling in the south. The northern part above the ceiling limit is attributable to the Graz Palaeozoic and consists of the Schöckl, which was formed in Devon. The middle and largest area of the municipality directly under the ceiling limit is the polymetamorphic basement belonging. There comes next phyllitischem mica schist to a lesser extent Plagioklasgneis that from the time of Permian - Triassic come before. Striking is a small area in the south of Gutenberg, which consists of entstandenem in the Permian pegmatite.

The South of the village is dominated by the Gleisdorfer layers of the Sarmatian and the Congerienschichten that were formed in the Pannon. Through the construction of this clayey Neogene basin fill, which includes individual coal seams, it is called the "Lower coal-bearing series of Weiz " ( Gleisdorfer layers ) and the " upper coal-bearing series of Weiz " ( Congerienschichten ). A small area in the southernmost part of Gutenberg occupies a valley with recent alluvial deposits, which is associated with the Holocene. The Raabklamm is up to the dam in the zone of Schöckelkalks and then enters a geologically crystalline region consisting initially of phyllitischem mica schist, but eventually from Plagioklasgneis.

World of forms

The assignment of the major landscape types roughly corresponds to the geological classification. In the north of Gutenberg, approximately to the level of the village Garrach, one speaks of Bergland. The middle part is the hill or Riedelland belonging, which south-west merges into a valley in the area of Semmering Small creek.

The relief energy is 690 m and is derived from the difference between the Sulzenwiese ( 1125 m) and the fabric mill ( 435 m). This value is at a maximum expansion of the municipal area of about 7.2 km, which extends from northwest to southeast, very impressive.

As a special phenomenon applies the valley section of Raab ( Raab Gorge ) to the east of the church. A second feature is the position of the lock Gutenberg, which lies on a narrow, three sides steep rocky ridge about 100 meters altitude above the Raab. Moreover, even caused by strong karst sinkholes and carts education in the field of Burgstaller altitude and south of Schachner Kogels to mention. Also noteworthy is the presence of numerous small and some of the larger caves on Schachner Kogel.

Climate

Comparable climatic elements for Gutenberg from the room Weiz ( observation period 1961-1990 ):

Waters

The most notable water in the municipal area are firstly, the Raab, which forms over a length of about 8.5 km, the border with the neighboring communities in the east, and on the other of almost 10 km long small Semmering Bach, forms of local and county line to the west. The biological water quality of Raab is classified as " lightly loaded " in this area, this corresponds to grade I - II

Less important rivers are the black grave Bach (about 2 km), the wash stream ( about 1.2 km), the Rosenbach ( about 3.5 miles) and the hard Blacksmith Bach ( approximately 2.3 miles). All these streams flow into the Raab.

When standing waters are still the meadow stock ponds to mention it in the floodplains, which are used with a total water surface area of about 1 ha of the fishing operation.

Overall, the water content is 9.81 hectares, representing 0.7 % of the municipality.

Soils

The definition of the different soil types is similar to the large landscape structure. In the north ( Garrach ) is the occurrence of brown earth and silicate rock dominating. In addition, although not as pronounced yet, you will find in this area also Reliktpseudogley. These soil types provide a strong forest growth in Garrach. The situation is different in the south ( Klein Semmering ), where the soil corresponds to a refined fen.

Vegetation and use

Particularly striking is the considerable proportion of forest of about 855 ha ( about 59 % ), of which there are 755 ha in Garrach. The natural vegetation in the north of the montane beech-fir forests of the edge of the Alps and in the south submontane oak-beech forests correspond to a large part of the currently prevailing vegetation. In the conifers come here with fir, pine and larch but mainly spruce ago. The deciduous forest is dominated mainly by the beech, but oak, maple, basswood and alder are part of the actual vegetation.

Almost 498 hectares, representing 34.3% of the total area dedicated as agricultural land, with 112 ha of which serve as farmland. This farmland is used about 50% for the cultivation of corn, the remaining area is managed in roughly equal proportions with wheat, rye and barley.
