Hannu Järvenpää

Hannu Järvenpää ( born May 19, 1963 in Ii ) is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey player and current coach, who played in his playing days from 1981 to 1995 among others for the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. Since 2012 he has been head coach at EC VSV in the Austrian Hockey League.

Career

Hannu Järvenpää began his career as a hockey player with Kärpät Oulu, for the first team to 1986 he was active from 1981 in the SM- liiga. In the season 1983/84 he ran in parallel also in four games for the Finnish Olympic team, which took part in preparation for the Olympic Games in the SM - liiga, but did not make it into the Olympic squad. Already in NHL Entry Draft 1982, the winger was selected in the seventh round as a total of 145 players from the Canadiens de Montréal. Since then, however, it did not take him under contract were the Winnipeg Jets in NHL Entry Draft, the Finns in 1986 in the fourth round as a total of 71 players to select. He then played three years for Winnipeg in the National Hockey League and came in this period parallel nine times for their farm team, the Moncton Hawks in the American Hockey League action. In his rookie year, the 1986/87 season he could only deny 20 games since he suffered a serious knee injury in a duel with Craig Muni of the Edmonton Oilers.

In the summer of 1989, Järvenpää returned to Finland, where he signed a contract with Lukko Rauma of the SM - liiga. After two years he left the team and was a year for the Leksand IF in the Swedish Elitserien on the ice. From 1993 to 1995 he played again for Kiekko - Espoo in the SM- liiga before he ended his active career at the age of 32 years. In his last season he was previously the only time in his career, Team Captain.

Between 2003 and 2006, the Olympian from 1992 as assistant coach for Saimaan Pallo and the Pelicans Lahti worked in the SM- liiga. In the U18 Junior C World Cup 2008, he supervised as full-time the U18 team in Estonia.

From the season 2009/10 he was head coach of the Slovenian club HDD Olimpija Ljubljana of the Austrian Hockey League, as he in November 2009, the Canadian Danny Gelinas replaced there. In 2012 he left the club and was obliged by league rivals EC VSV.

Internationally

For Järvenpää Finland took part in the junior level at the Junior World Championships in 1982 and 1983. At the 1992 World Junior Championships he won the bronze medal with his team. In the senior level, he stood in his country's squad at the World Championships in 1985, 1986, 1989, 1991 and 1992, and in 1991 at the Canada Cup and the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville. In his last World Cup appearance in 1992 he became vice world champion with his team.
