JOEUF is a commune with 6795 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle in the Lorraine region.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the JOEUF Orne, about 20 kilometers northwest of Metz in nordlothringischen ore basins of Briey.

History

By the Peace of Frankfurt, the town was a border town in 1871 to the German Reich. From the annexed by the German part of Lorraine, many people moved to JOEUF, this and the same onset of industrialization boom ensured that the number of inhabitants multiplied within a few years. The decline of mining in the region in the late 20th century is also reflected in the development of the population of the town: in 1968 still lived 12,300 people in JOEUF, there were only 7,453 in 1999.
