Karmøy

Karmøy is a commune on the homonymous island in Rogaland in Norway. It is located between Stavanger and Haugesund. The administrative office is located in Kopervik.

Geography

The island is connected by a bridge over the Karmsund to the mainland. The highest point of the municipality is Søra Sålafjellet (132 moh. ) South of Kopervik. Karmøy is in the countryside Haugaland.

The formerly independent municipalities Vedavågen Sandve, Ferkingstad and Visnes were united in 1965 to the commune Karmøy.

In the municipality there are three cities: Kopervik, Skudeneshavn Leiesundet.

History

Traffic

Skudeneshavn can be reached by ferry from Stavanger on Mekjarvik in just over an hour. From the Avaldsnes 650 meters long Karmsundbrücke leads to Haugesund.

The Karmøy international airport connects the region with Oslo, Bergen, Sandefjord ( Torp ) and London ( Ryanair ).

Economy

In addition to agriculture, trade, fishing and shipping aluminum production ( Hydro Aluminium Karmøy ) plays a major role.

In Skudeneshavn with his late-classical old town there is a small museum with Maelandgåden Shop from the 19th century.

Visnes there is a local history museum on the site of a former copper mine. From this mine comes presumably the copper for the Statue of Liberty, which gave the French the city of New York.
