Kryvyi Rih Raion

The Rajon Krivoy Rog (Ukrainian Криворізький район; Russian Криворожский район / Kriworoschski rayon ) is an administrative unit within the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in central Ukraine. The Rajon has an area of ​​1347.24 km ² and a population of about 45,000 inhabitants ( December 2012). The population density is 33 inhabitants per km ².

The administrative center is the city of Krivoy Rog, but is not part of Rajons itself. The city is located 145 km southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Dnipropetrovsk and 250 km northeast of Odessa. The largest town is the village of Rajons Losuwatka, ahead of the two lying in the urban-type settlements Rajon.

History

The Rajon Krivoy Rog was founded on March 7, 1923. In 1962, he was terminated in connection with the reorganization of rural areas. Its territory was divided among the Rajonen Sofijiwka, Schyroke, Apostolowe and Rajon Pjatychatky. In 1965, Rajon was restored.

Geography

The Rajon bordered to the north by the Rajon Pjatychatky, in the northeast on the Rajon Sofijiwka, on the southeast by the Rajon Apostolowe, to the south by Rajon Schyroke, to the southwest with the Rajon Kasanka to the Oblast Mykolaiv and to the northwest by the Oblast Kirovohrad with the Rajonen Dolynska and Petrowe. The Rajon surrounds the entire northern part of the independent city Krivoy Rog and lies partly in the Krywbass, probably the most important iron ore region of Eastern Europe.

The largest river of the region is the Inhulez, a tributary of the Dnieper River, which is dammed above Krivoy Rog to over 26 m² Karatschuniwka reservoir. Another river is the Saksahan that opens in Krivoy Rog in the Inhulez.

Transport links

The national highway runs from northeast to southwest through the Raion and connects it to the border towns Sofijiwka and Kasanka and continuing with Dnipropetrovsk and Mykolaiv.
