Ordzhonikidze, Ukraine

Ordzhonikidze (Ukrainian Орджонікідзе; Russian Орджоникидзе ) is a city in Ukraine with a population of 41,000 (2013 ) to the south of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The city is named after the Soviet politician Sergo Ordzhonikidze.

Ordzhonikidze lies in the historical region of the so-called "wild field " on the left bank of the Basawluk ( Базавлук ), a 157 km long tributary of the Dnieper River and in close proximity to Kachowkaer reservoir. For Oblastzentrum Dnipropetrovsk the distance is 110 km, the nearest major city is Nikopol 25 km east of the city.

For the municipality include the two settlements of urban type Hirnyzke (Ukrainian Гірницьке ) and Tschortomlyk (Ukrainian Чортомлик ).

History

The changing history of the region, one can understand very well within the city limits: Not far from the city, a 1971 excavated Scythian Kurgan is ( grave mound ) from the 4th century BC, in which, among other things, a golden pectoral was found. South of the city, in the valley of the Dnieper River, which is now flooded by the reservoir Kachowkaer, was the medieval trade route from Scandinavia to Byzantium. In addition, parts of the city are on the grounds of a former Sich of the Zaporozhian Cossacks. The city was founded in 1883 as a mining settlement called Prytschepyliwka near a manganese mine. Since 1956, Ordzhonikidze has the status of a city.
