La Roque-d'Anthéron

La Roque- d'Anthéron is a commune with 5357 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bouches -du -Rhône in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

The community is located 25 kilometers north-west of Aix -en- Provence. Neighboring municipalities are Charleval, Rognes, Lambesc and Saint- Esteve - Janson. The municipality belongs to the community association Communauté d' agglomération du Pays d' Aix.

History

In around 200 BC, was located on the present-day municipality apparently a Celtic settlement. 1144 came the first Cistercian monks in 1175 the foundation stone of the Abbey Church of Silvacane was laid. 1514 to seventy families settled new on here, including many Waldenses. On April 17, 1545 were troops who murdered the resident Waldenses. In addition, the hamlet Silvacane was burnt down. In 1554 a new leader through La Roque- d'Anthéron Canal was opened, which supplied Salon-de -Provence with water from the Durance. The channel also allowed the construction of a water mill. 1560, the first Protestant church in the region was built in La Roque- d'Anthéron to an unknown place. 1598 Renaissance castle in the village was built. Today it houses a nursing home. 1777 Auguste de Forbin was born in the castle. 1847 Canal de Marseille was dug, which also runs through the town.
