La Tour-d'Aigues

La Tour- d'Aigues is a commune with 4028 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Vaucluse department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

La Tour- d'Aigues located in the southeast of the département of Vaucluse and is surrounded by the municipalities Ansouis, Pertuis, La bastidonne, Mirabeau, Gram Bois, Saint -Martin -de- la- Brasque and La Motte- d'Aigues. Nearest large city is Pertuis in South West ( 5 km).

In the north of the parish, the mountains of the Luberon extends to the Luberon Regional Nature Park, to which the municipality belongs. South of La Tour- d'Aigues lies the valley of the Durance. The municipality is crossed by 24 km long river Eze, which flows south-west of Pertuis in the Durance.

Traffic

The route Departmental D956 comes from the south-west from Pertuis and heads northeast on to Gram Bois.

Nearest railway station is the railway station Pertuis, with which you have connected to the cities of Lyon, Marseille and Aix -en- Provence.

History

The city owes its name to a medieval fortress that was built in the 11th century. In the late 18th century, the city experienced an economic boom due to grain and wine, as well as textiles and earthenware.

  • Château de la Tour-d'Aigues ( completely renovated in the 16th and 17th century, shortly before the French Revolution burned ). Caterina de ' Medici in 1579 was received in the lock.

  • Maison d' Estienne du Bourguet, built 1658-1671, with wall paintings from the 17th century
