Vaugines

Vaugines is a commune with 505 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vaucluse in Provence -Alpes- Côte d' Azur region.

Geography

Vaugines located in the southeast of the département of Vaucluse and is surrounded by the municipalities of Lourmarin, Cadenet, Ansouis, Cucuron, Sivergues and Buoux. Nearest large towns are apt in the north ( 11 km) and Pertuis in the east ( 12 km).

The village is surrounded by vineyards, small oak woods and olive groves. In the north of the municipality of the steep southern slope of the Grand Luberon rises with the Luberon Regional Nature Park, to which the municipality but not heard. To the west of the town center of Laval stream flows past and opens at Cadenet in the Durance.

Traffic

The place Vaugines can be reached via Route Departmental D56, the south of the village center passes through the community on an east-west axis. The D45 branches off from this to the south and leads further to Cadenet. Through the southern municipality of the D27 from Lourmarin Coming runs in the direction cucuron.

History

The establishment of Vaugines goes back to the common will of the Benedictines of psalmody and the Baron of Ansouis, on the ruins of the monastery St- Saveur built a church and a castle in the 13th century. The village was abandoned in the early 15th century by the inhabitants and repopulated in 1474. In the 18th century it came on the rock Poucelles, in today's Quartier des Grottes, establishing a cave settlement.

The Town Hall Square was built in the 19th century as part of a redesign of the town center and should serve as a link between the two hitherto separate districts. Around the square, many new public buildings and shops were built. The bell tower of a towered Mairie replaced in 1845 the former parish hall.

The Commandery in the rue des Amazones is housed in a medieval building extended. The former town house Hôtel des Bouliers was owned by the Bouliers family, which included the prior of Vaugines in the 16th century. The capitainerie was built in the 16th century by Antoine Bouchard, who was known as Capitaine de Vaugines. The massive house with cross Stock windows located near the former town house dating from the 18th century.

Built on the remains of a monastery church St- Barthélémy is located outside the village center and dated mainly to the 13th century. She served as the setting for the film Jean Florette, which was shot by director Claude Berri from a novel by Marcel Pagnol.

Others

From the church to the Luberon follow an old path that is mentioned in the novel L' Habitant de Sivergue by Henri Bosco.
