Rustrel

Rustrel is a municipality in the southern French region of Provence -Alpes- Côte d' Azur. It is part of the Vaucluse and the Arrondissement Apt. The village has 772 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) and an area of ​​28 km ².

Geography

The village lies at the foot of two hills, near the town of Apt, on the banks of the River Coulon. The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park of Luberon. Known are its different colored ochres. In some places even ocher is mined, in order to extract natural colors for the decorative arts. The locals tell me that over 20 different colors could be obtained.

History

First traces of settlement can be found from the Neolithic period. From the time of the Roman Empire, numerous traces are found. Written mentioned then the village as Rograstrel in the 12th century, in 1274 as Ruastrello.

During the religious wars of the village from 1570 to 1575 was occupied by the Huguenots.

Attractions

In addition to the main attraction, the ocher rocks in the village and the surrounding area, there are a church from the 16th century and a castle from the 17th century in which the municipality is located today. In an oil mill from the 18th century, a small museum is housed.
