Lauris

Lauris is a commune with 3709 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vaucluse and the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Lauris is located in the south of the department of Vaucluse and is surrounded by the communities of Puget, La Roque- d'Anthéron and Puyvert. Nearest large towns are apt to the northeast and Pertuis in the southeast, each 16 km away.

In the north of the parish, the mountains of the Luberon rises with the Luberon Regional Nature Park, to which the municipality belongs. In the south of the Durance, which also forms the border with the department of Bouches -du -Rhône flows.

Traffic

To the south of the community center, the D973 runs on an east-west axis. Running parallel to the railway line Cheval Blanc Pertuis, but this is no longer open for passenger traffic since 1971.

History

The population of the municipality is, due to the favorable location on the Durance, and the early historical time back. At the end of the Neolithic in this area especially the Lagozza culture was spread, which is attested by the Lauris stele. The first mention of the place was in 1079th in the Middle Ages Lauris was first in episcopal possession and was then managed by the Counts of Provence. 1552 Lauris was a fief of François de Pérussis and stood in the seventeenth century under the rule of the Dukes of Lesdiguières. In the eighteenth century the Marquis d' Arlatan controlled the village. After the depopulation of the region as a result of the plague settled in many places in the southern Luberon Protestants. Lauris, spared as one of the few communities of the plague, on the other hand remained mostly Catholic. In the nineteenth century there was a recovery in agriculture. Lauris has become known worldwide especially for growing asparagus.
