Mirabeau (Vaucluse)

Mirabeau is a commune with 1194 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vaucluse and the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

The community Mirabeau is located in the southeast of the department of Vaucluse. She is in Vaucluse by the municipalities Beaumont -de- Pertuis, Gram Bois, La Tour- d'Aigues, Pertuis and in the department of Bouches -du -Rhône surrounded by the municipality Jouques. Nearest large city is Pertuis in the west ( 12 km).

In the north- west of the municipality, the mountains of the Luberon rises with the Luberon Regional Nature Park, to which the municipality belongs. The Durance forms the southern boundary of the municipality and the border with the department of Bouches -du -Rhône. Part of the municipality in the southwest is occupied by the Biosphere Reserve Luberon Lure.

Traffic

The route runs Departmental D973 Coming on an east-west axis of Pertuis and hits east of the center on the D996. The D996 goes from the junction heading east on to Manosque and meets south on the Autoroute A51, which leads to Aix -en- Provence.

Nearest railway station is the railway station Pertuis, with the obtained subsequent to the cities of Lyon, Marseille and Aix -en- Provence.

History

Perched on a hill village experienced in the Middle Ages due to its proximity to the Durance of significant development. In the 16th century the Lord of Forcalquier was given the privilege of Queen Joanna to establish a ferry and to collect the right taxes on people, goods and rafts from driftwood. The Ferry contributed to the upswing of the town and it came to the establishment of several hostels. The village received a large city wall, but was weakened in the following centuries of the ongoing disputes its various lords.

Fame the community by the Marquis de Mirabeau, who occupied at the beginning of the revolution an important role as spokesman of the Third Estate in the Estates General. The prosperity of Mirabeau shrank in the 19th century with the construction of a bridge over the Durance and the establishment of a railway line.
