List of highest mountains of Germany

The list of the highest mountains in Germany leads to the highest peak in Germany. All these mountains are located in the state of Bavaria. Within the Alps, they are in the Eastern Alps and are part of the Northern Limestone Alps. For the most part they belong to the mountain ranges of weather stone, Berchtesgaden and Allgäu Alps.

Since the definition of a mountain is not set universal, a distinction is made between the main peaks and other peaks. It does not include secondary summit. In the Alps, the summit according to the UIAA definition from a saddle height of 30 meters is considered independently. However, in order to classify a summit as a stand-alone mountain, minimum - saddle heights are given by 100 m or (according to other sources ) of 300 meters. According to the latter definition, only the main peak of entire mountain ranges are counted. All elevations under a saddle height of 30 meters are considered as secondary peaks.

The highest main peak in Germany are Zugspitze ( 2,962 m), Hochwanner ( 2,744 m) and watzmann - center top ( 2,713 m). If one evaluates all independent summit, follow after the Zugspitze Schneefernerkopf ( 2,875 m) and the Central Weather peak ( 2,747 m) on the second and third places. But both are part of the Zugspitze massif and are relatively close to the Zugspitze summit.

The highest main peak, stands completely on German territory, is the watzmann - central tip with 2.713 meters above sea level, so the hochkalter ( 2,607 m), the Great Thumb ( 2,280 m) and the Höfats ( 2,259 m). Also completely on German territory, but with a much lower reliance, are the Middle Höllentalspitze ( 2,742 m) and the Hochblassen ( 2,703 m).

Much of the summit was proven climbed in the 19th century, watzmann - central tip and Hoher Goll, for example, already in 1800. Zugspitze was officially confirmed in 1820, climbed for the first time. However, there are too many peaks suspicions that they have been climbed in earlier times by unknown assailants.

Since in the course of history the borders of Germany myriad changes, there was in the past a wide range of " high mountains ". During the colonial period to 1918 Kilimanjaro was in the colony of German East Africa with 5,895 m the highest mountain officially the German Empire. During the period of National Socialism 1938-1945, this title came to the Grossglockner, this is at 3,798 m the highest mountain in Austria today. Highest mountain in the GDR was the Fichtelbergbahn ( 1,215 m).
