The public model railroad layouts can be divided into

Plants, which are conducted on a professional
Systems which ( museum education ) are part of a museum collection, particularly in technology and toy museums and
Plants that were by individuals or associations at first and still mainly built for personal pleasure and to further expand, but are publicly available ( criterion for inclusion in this list: At least 30 days a year ).

Other distinguishing features may be the plant size and the quality of the treated topics such as modeling fidelity ( the landscape depicted / the train operating part or rolling stock ).

In the Children's Hospital in Mainz a model railway system was set up at the request of a professor 1995, which is 5 hours in operation daily.

Saxony

Dresden: In the Dresden Transport Museum is a 325 sq. ft. facility, the track 0 with restricted demonstration times.
