History
Steinfeld in today's Middle Franconia belonged to the Free Imperial City of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, which was in the Frankish Empire Circle from 1500. Since the Imperial Diet of 1803 the place belonged to Bavaria. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, was born with the congregation of 1818 the current municipality.
Incorporations
On 1 May 1978, the formerly independent communities Endsee, husband Mayrhofen and Hartershofen were incorporated.

After the last municipal election on March 2, 2008, the council has twelve members, all belonging to the faction group of voters. The turnout was 73.7 %. Another member and chairman of the municipal council is the mayor.

Established businesses
A special economic operation is the model railway of family Köttgen in the district Reichelshofen.
