Lochem

( Listen? / I ) Lochem is a municipality of the province of Gelderland. It has a total area of ​​216.02 km ² and counted on 1 January 2013, according to the CBS 33 304 inhabitants.

Location and economic

Lochem is located 15 km east of Zutphen Berkel river. The town has a small railway station on the local railway Zutphen - Hengelo. About Laren performs a 10-km long road to Amsterdam motorway - Berlin. Lochem has some industry, but agriculture and tourism are of greater importance. History

Lochem originated in the 10th century by a court of the counts of Gelre or funds. It received city rights in 1233.

Lochem was often the target of attacks and sieges, including 1506 ( Charles of Egmont ); 1543 ( funds shear war, devastation caused by imperial troops ); during the Eighty Years' War, 1582 and 1590 ( failed), 1606 ( stormed by the Spaniards and by Ernst Casimir of Nassau- Dietz for the Netherlands recaptured ); and finally it was occupied until 1673 by the 1672 Munster. In between, there was a devastating fire in 1615. As of 1680 broke at quieter times, and Lochem was a market town for the surrounding farmers.

On 1 January 2005 the municipality Gorssel ( 13,500 inhabitants) was dissolved and part of the municipality of Lochem (previously 19,000 inhabitants).

Attractions

The City Council of Lochem built in 1634. The church in the town center was dedicated before the Reformation, the patron saint of Brussels, St.Gudula.

In the town there are some locks: House Verwolde in Laren, can be visited. Not far from it is a very thick and old tree. This should be one of the oldest trees in the Netherlands.

The community is rich in natural areas, including the Barchemer Mountain, a small wooded hills and the forests of the town of Joppa ( in Gorssel ). The parks and forests in the castles and the east bank of the river IJssel at Gorssel are worth a hike. The poet ACW Staring (1767-1840), the area of ​​this community often sung in his works (as well as the neighboring community Vorden ). You can follow his tracks by a cycling tour (ask at the Tourist Office ).
