Geography

Neighbors of the Main- Taunus district are similarly structured high- Taunus district in the north, the Rheingau- Taunus-Kreis in the north west, the district-free city of Wiesbaden in the west, the industrial nature Gross-Gerau district in the south and the district-free city of Frankfurt am Main in the east.

The district area extends from the Main ( about 90 m above sea level. NN ) up to the High Taunus. The highest mountain of the circle is the calibration head ( 563.3 m) at Kelkheim - Ruppertshain, to the municipal reform in Hesse in 1972 was the highest mountain in the Taunus mountains, the Great Feldberg ( 881.5 m ) to the circle area.

Besides the wooded Taunus mountains characterize orchards, meandering streams and some agricultural land undeveloped part of the landscape, but residential areas and roads dominate the largest part of the circle of the landscape.

With the exception of the three cities on the Main include all county municipalities Vortaunus that reaches up Friedrichsdorf withdrawing from Hofheim linear city west and northwest of Frankfurt, which is part of the so-called Frankfurt " bacon belt" is.

Especially the eastern part of the county is extremely densely populated for a county and is part of the suburban (local ) to the metropolitan area of Frankfurt. In Germany there are only a few similar large urban embossed counties, about the circles Recklinghausen, Mettmann and Ennepe -Ruhr in the Rhine -Ruhr, the district of Munich or the Offenbach district, south of Frankfurt. With over 1,000 inhabitants per square kilometer, the Main- Taunus-Kreis is the county with the second highest population density in the Federal Republic.

Remarkable parallels, a comparison of the Main- Taunus district with the neighboring city of Wiesbaden. He has a little less of area and slightly less on population, and the population density of the district is also only slightly lower than in Wiesbaden.

Due to its predominantly of middle class population belonging to the Main -Taunus district is one of the most prosperous regions of the country and takes, depending on the indicator and year, sometimes the nationwide top position. The highest purchasing power in the Main- Taunus district have residents in Bad Soden.

Eppstein, Hofheim, Florsheim and Hochheim are old cities with well-preserved old towns. The fertile soils also ensured in pre-industrial times already for a relatively high level of prosperity and population density, which old village centers, churches and courtyards testify.

Economy

Economical benefits of the Main- Taunus-Kreis of its central location and its suburban character. In particular, the services sector ( " Tertiary Sector " ) determines the economy of the circle. Suburban communities in the east of the circle area to move through lower business tax rates companies from Frankfurt to relocate to their city.

Eschborn thus became home to many leading enterprises, in particular parts of the German Bank AG, the German Börse AG and Vodafone. Also Schwalbach, Sulzbach ( Taunus), and Bad Soden Kriftel benefit greatly from the Gewerbesuburbanisierung. In Sulzbach is also home to the Main- Taunus-Zentrum (MTZ ), the oldest and still one of the largest shopping centers in Germany. In Eschborn and Hofheim- Wallau are two large agglomerations of specialized and large-scale markets, as well as the Main- Taunus-Zentrum, are well connected to the motorway network, but only in modest form of public transport.

To a lesser extent possessed and possesses the circle also industrial enterprises. Sarotti in Hattersheim has been decommissioned and partly demolished; the newly built Sarotti Center, a local shopping mall, reminiscent in name it. In Kelkheim is a medium-sized furniture industry. Located just beyond the county boundaries, in Frankfurt-Höchst, Rüsselsheim and the right bank of Mainz suburbs more large industrial enterprises, of which the Adam Opel AG is the largest in Rüsselsheim.

Despite the solid economic basis, most cities of the circle commuters living communities, tens of thousands of workers travel daily to Frankfurt to work, many more to Wiesbaden, Mainz and other cities in the region.

Agriculture and forestry play a diminishing role. Agriculture is dominated by orchards, which contribute to the production of the famous apple wine. The most famous fruit-growing municipality in the district is Kriftel. In Hochheim and Florsheim -Wicker wine is grown, both places are part of the Rheingau wine region.

Traffic

The district is located in the center of a metropolitan area and is crossed by numerous roads of partially international importance.

Road

For the circle itself and the Wiesbaden -Frankfurt originally known as the Rhine -Main- expressway highway A66 is the main arterial road. It runs through the county area in east-west direction and connects it with the two adjacent cities and Mainz. About the Wiesbaden Cross, the West Cross Frankfurt and the Frankfurt Nordwestkreuz the A 66 is linked to the A 3 and A 5. Thus, providing fast connections to the Frankfurt airport on the one hand and the other hand on the trunk road network in all directions.

Apart from the Wiesbaden junction at Hofheim- Wallau has the A3 motorway to the district no connection point. It runs on the western border and in the south of the district and connects the metropolitan areas in Holland and the Rhine -Ruhr Frankfurt and the south-east of Central Europe.

The B 40 links the A66 on the A 671 and the Theodor- Heuss- Bridge with Mainz and from Krifteler triangle on the Sindlinger Main Bridge with Kelsterbach, Frankfurt airport and the southern districts of Frankfurt.

The A 671 is part of the Mainz ring road and the city Hochheim of great importance. The highway-like -developed national road 8 connects the A66 and Frankfurt- Höchst with Bad Soden, Kelkheim and Königstein im Taunus.

Even the highways B 455 ( Wiesbaden- Königstein ) and B 519 ( Königstein - Rüsselsheim ) lead through the district.

Rail transport

A total of seven railway lines run through the small Main- Taunus-Kreis. All twelve municipalities have rail access.

The nationally important rail route, but without holding station in the district, which went into operation in 2002 high-speed line has been the Frankfurt and Cologne is connects in about an hour. It runs largely parallel to the motorway A 3 ( and there offers the speeds driven often by three times ). In Hofheim- Wallau branches off leading to Wiesbaden branch line of the high-speed line from the main line.

The circle itself is accessible by railway lines emanating from the Frankfurt-Höchst station radiate:

Two other S -Bahn lines reach from the circle area from Frankfurt Central Station:

  • The S3 Eschborn, Schwalbach and Sulzbach to Bad Soden, and
  • The S4 Eschborn to Kronberg.

There is also a dense bus network. In the county town of Hofheim the Rhine- Main Transport Association ( RMV) has its seat

To the construction of a ring road, linking the major Western Suburbs with each other and relieve the transfer hubs in Frankfurt city center is planned for mid-90s, with the construction could begin in the next few years: the Regional tangent West is among other things the city of Eschborn with Frankfurt-Höchst and the airport link.

Traffic

The Frankfurt International Airport is just a few kilometers outside of the district and can be reached in a few minutes. In Hattersheim Kriftel and therefore airport-related companies have settled. However, the pool does not only take advantage of the airport: Many towns in the district are affected by aircraft noise. The extent of noise is detected by the German aircraft noise and long service eV documented, which has its headquarters in Eppstein.

The airfield Wiesbaden heritage home is around one kilometer west of the county border and was in the 80s as a possible satellite airport for the Rhine -Main subject of concrete expansion plans. The airport will continue to be used by the U.S. Air Force, which does not allow a civilian conversion.

The Frankfurt-Hahn Airport in the state of Rhineland -Palatinate is located about 100 kilometers west of the Main- Taunus-Kreis.

Inland waterways

In the Main- Taunus-Kreis there is only one major inland port, in Florsheim - Kolo. However, there are other ports in the immediate vicinity, so the Höchst Industrial Park in Kelsterbach, in Raunheimer industrial area Caltex / Ticona, the Rüsselsheim Opel plant in Mainz and fare home (district of Wiesbaden).

In the district there are two locks equipped with barrages in the Main: the barrages Eddersheim and Ginsheim.

History

The circular area belonged in the Middle Ages partly to Eppstein, partially Kurmainz since 1803 Nassau- Usingen and since 1806 the Duchy of Nassau, and since the Prussian annexation in 1866 of the province of Hesse -Nassau. The municipalities between Wiesbaden and Frankfurt were there - while retaining the existing division into the offices Hochheim, maximum, Idstein and Königstein - initially assigned to the Main Circle with headquarters in Wiesbaden ( offices Hochheim and maximum ), the communities in the Official Königstein the Upper Taunus district and the Office Idstein the Untertaunus circle.

With the entry into force of a new Hesse- Nassau County Code from April 1, 1886, the province was divided into new, smaller circles and dissolved the offices. Instead of the main circuit so the counties High and Wiesbaden emerged.

Due to the population growth of the cities of Frankfurt and Wiesbaden and its environs a municipal reorganization of the region was required on April 1, 1928. Several municipalities in the counties High and Wiesbaden, including the City of maximum, were incorporated into the neighboring cities. Both districts lost most of its inhabitants. The remaining communities of both circles as well as some municipalities from the districts of Upper Taunus, Usingen and Untertaunus were merged to form a new district named Main- Taunus-Kreis.

The circle had 45 towns and cities in its inception. The number dropped in 1938 incorporations to Kelkheim and Hofheim on 42 On a historical map of the Main- Taunus district from 1951 are 6 cities and 40 rural municipalities with population demonstrated.

1945 changed the district area again the national affiliation and became part of the state of Hesse.

In the municipal reform in Hesse 1972-77 the district was changed considerably, both at its external borders as well as in his community structure.

December 31, 1971 the closing date of the funded by the state government through increased key assignments " voluntary " phase, nine district municipalities could connect it to the cities of Hofheim, Florsheim, Hattersheim and Eschborn. By fusion of two neighboring villages also the two new communities Unterliederbach originated am Taunus ( from Oberliederbach and low Hofheim ) and Rossert ( from Eppenhain and Ruppertshain ).

The communities that were not ready for a voluntary association were assigned 1 January 1977 by a state law neighboring towns. This was ten old municipalities as well as the only five -year-old community Rossert, which did not reach the required minimum size, with around 2500 inhabitants. The incorporations adopted as fixed during the consultation phase of Sulzbach to Bad Soden, from Kriftel to Hofheim, have been withdrawn under unclear circumstances still not clear, just before the resolution of Parliament from the bill. The representatives of the two communities had previously vehemently to maintain their independence.

Through municipal mergers on county boundaries of the county was also reduced greatly by he made communities in neighboring counties:

  • The communities Schloßborn, today glassworks and Oberreifenberg today Schmitten, at the Hoch-Taunus Kreis (1972 ),
  • The community Niedernhausen to the Rheingau -Taunus -Kreis ( 1977), and
  • The communities Auringen, Breckenheim, Delkenheim, Medenbach, Naurod and north of the city to the city of Wiesbaden ( 1977).

Since the completion of the territorial reform of Main- Taunus-Kreis has twelve municipalities, nine cities.

County town and administrative center was in 1928 the Höchst district of Frankfurt. With effect from 1 January 1980 Hofheim am Taunus was determined by law for the seat of county government, but this was postponed until 1987 with the completion of the new circuit house to Hofheim.
