Margate is a city in Broward County in the U.S. state of Florida with 53 284 inhabitants ( 2010). The geographic coordinates are: 26.25 ° North, 80.21 ° West. The metropolitan area has a size of 23.3 km ².

Geography

Margate is located about 10 km north- west of Fort Lauderdale and 40 km north of Miami. Adjacent municipalities are Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach and North Lauderdale.

Religions

In Margate there are 21 different churches from 10 different denominations. Among the belonging to a denomination churches the Baptist church is best represented with four churches. Furthermore, there are 5 to no denomination belonging churches ( as of 2004).

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 53 284 inhabitants distributed in 24 863 households. The population density was 2,337 inh. / Km ². 62.0 % of the population were white, 25.8 % African American, 0.4% Native American and 4.0 % Asian Americans. 4.6% were members of other ethnic groups and 3.3% in different ethnic groups. 22.2 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 36.5 % of all households lived in 28.9 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 62.8 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.47 persons and the average family size is 3.10 people.

22.8 % of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.0% were 20-39 years old, 27.6% were 40-59 years old and 25.5 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 42 years. 46.8 % of the population were male and 53.2 % female.

The average annual income was $ 45,674, while 13.5 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 75.91 % of the population spoke Spanish 13.78% and 10.31% had a different mother tongue.
