Michael Albasini ( born December 20, 1980 in Wil ) is a Swiss cyclist.
Career
Michael Albasini, a trained teacher, drives since 1992 cycling race and won in 1998 as a junior, the Swiss championship on the road and on the mountain. 2001 drove Albasini as a stagiaire at Fassa Bortolo and finished fourth at the Ster Elektrotoer. Still, he could not convince the team management of Fassa Bortolo and got there no contract. He became European Champion in the U23 category in 2002.
In 2003, he began his professional career with Phonak. His only notable placement in the two years at Phonak was a fifth place in the Championship of Zurich in 2004.
2005 Albasini joined the Italian team Liquigas. In the Tour de Suisse in 2005, he became the fastest a breakaway the 5th stage of Zurzach to Altdorf. In the spring of 2007 he won a stage of the Circuit de la Sarthe. At the 10th stage of the Tour de France in 2007, he belonged to an eleven-member breakaway and finished the sprint in 3rd place. 2008 Albasini took over after a 2nd place in the prologue and a 3rd place on the first stage of the Tour de Romandie 2008, the leader's jersey, but that he could not defend to the end. 2009 was a successful year for him. After a stage win in the Tour de Suisse in 2009 and in the Basque country tour he not only won a stage in the Tour of Austria but for the first time in his career a total score of a smaller tour. In 2010, he also reached a stage win in the Tour of Britain plus the overall win this tour. In 2011 he had a stage win in the Tour of Bavaria and the victory in the one-day race Grand Prix of the Canton of Aargau. In the Tour of Spain for the first time he managed to win a stage at one of the three Grand Tours. In 2012, he won two stages and the overall classification at the Tour of Catalonia. In June 2012, he won the eighth stage to Arosa at the Tour de Suisse. In 2013 he won a stage in the sprint of a larger group of Paris- Nice. After that, he was able to repeat his victory of 2011 at the Grand Prix of the canton Aargau and thus won this race for the second time. At the Tour de France in 2013, he won with his team time trial - with a rounded second ahead of the second classified team.
For breach of the duty to report Albasini 2005 was blocked by the Swiss Cycling Federation for six weeks and covered with a fine in the amount of 2,000 Swiss francs.

Life
Albasini is the father of two sons and lives with his family in Gais. He originally trained as a teacher.
