Milan–Venice railway

The railway line Milan - Venice is one of the most important main lines in Italy. It connects the capital of the northern Italian region of Lombardy, Milan, it is situated on the Adriatic city of Venice in the Veneto region. History

The route was planned by the Austrian Kingdom of Lombardy - Venetia to connect Milan to Venice. For this purpose, the Imperial Regia Privilege Strada ferrata Ferdinandea Lombardo - Veneta dell'Imperatore was founded. The track was built in several sections:

  • The first section from Padua to Marghera was opened on 13 December 1842.

The original route via Treviglio, Bergamo and Brescia was 285 km long. The direct route between Rovato and Treviglio was opened on 5 March 1878.

In 1852, the operating company was taken over by the state, but was privatized in 1856. The Rothschild family bought the company for 156.25 million gold francs, by the Societé des Chemins de Fer IR privilégiée Lombards - venitiens et de l'Italie Centrale was founded. Operation

The route is 267 km long, double track and electrified. The main cities are Brescia, Verona, Vicenza, Padua and Mestre. There exist also connect to other public transport.
