Moyenmoutier

Moyenmoutier ( dt: Medium Münster) is a commune with 3295 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint- Dié -des-Vosges and Canton Senones.

Geography

The town lies at the mouth of Rabodeau in the Meurthe, ten kilometers north of Saint- Dié -des- Vosges. The forest coverage of 34.21 km ² of the municipal area in the Vosges is almost 80%.

The municipality consists of the villages and hamlets of La Chapelle, La Prelle, Le Grand Himbaumont, Le Paire, Le Petit Himbaumont, Saint -Blaise and Saint- Prayel.

Neighboring communities of Moyenmoutier are Celles- sur -Plaine ( point of contact ) to the north, Senones and Menil -de- Senones in the east, Ban -de- Sapt and Denipaire the southeast, Hurbache and La Voivre in the south, Étival - Clairefontaine in the west and Raon- l' Etape in the northwest.

History

The origin of the name is clear: Founded in 671 by Saint Hydulph Monastery ( moutier ) is between the monasteries of Senones in the east, Étival in the West, Saint- Dié in the south and Bonmoutier ( in Val- et- Châtillon ) in the north. Together, the five monasteries, the Croix de Lorraine Sacrée.

In the year 915 Moyenmoutier was looted and burnt down by the Magyars. 960 was rebuilt. In the 12th century Aubert de Paroye built on the rock " La Haute Pierre " a castle, which was destroyed on the orders of the Duke of Lorraine in the following century.

End of the 16th century, the monastery was due to the administration in commendam in a deplorable state. The managing Abbot, Erich von Lothringen - Mercoer, who was also abbot of the monastery of Saint -Vanne in Verdun as well as Bishop of Verdun, attempted to restore orderly conditions. In 1604, Pope Clement VIII approved the statutes of the Congregation of Saint -Vanne et Saint- Hydulphe whose mother monasteries, the two abbeys of Saint- Vanne and Moyenmoutier were. The monasteries were very heavily involved in the Counter-Reformation and founded the Congregation of française de Saint- Maur, which was much better known. The 18th century was the golden age of Moyenmoutier, as Dom Augustin Calmet taught here, the later abbot of the neighboring monastery in Senones was. The French Revolution abolished the monastery Moyenmoutier.
