Municipality of Žirovnica

Žirovnica ( German Scheraunitz ) is a municipality in the Upper Carniola in northwestern Slovenia.

The municipality comprises the towns of Breg ( Rann ), Breznica ( German Bresnitz ) Doslovče, musts ( stone bridges, older also: Bruckl ) Rodine ( Rodein ), Selo pri Žirovnici, Smokuč ( Smokutsch ), Vrba ( Velden ), and Zabreznica Žirovnica ( Scheraunitz ), the largest town in the municipality with 550 inhabitants. The seat of the municipality is located in Breznica. Žirovnica is located at the headwaters of the Sava and at the foot of the high chair (Slovenian Veliki Stol ) and is therefore a popular starting point for hikes in the Karawanken. In the village there are two hydroelectric power stations: one on the river Završnica ( completed in 1914) and one on the Sava River near the village of musts ( completed 1952).

Attractions

In Breznica the parish church of St. Mary of 1819 and the Votive Church of St. Radegund are out of the year in 1468.

However, the probably oldest church in the municipality is in itself Žirovnica The originally Romanesque building was mentioned in 1468, but is much older. In the first half of the 15th century Gothic elements were added in the presbytery, in the baroque church is enlarged and built a new bell tower. In the immediate vicinity of the church remains from the Roman and Slavic graves were found from the early Middle Ages during archaeological excavations.

In Studenčice the Church of St. Florian, which was originally dedicated to Saint Rupert and was first documented in 1436 stands. Is located paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries on the inner and outer facade.
