History

The track was originally intended as a direct connection from Nuremberg to Bayreuth, which was connected to the Ludwig South - North Railway in the year 1848 by means of a branch line from New Market Wirsberg from. Since the detour via Bamberg was not a satisfactory solution, followed by planning for a direct connection to Nuremberg. There were variants " Forchheim Ebermannstadt ", " Graefenberg - Pegnitz ", " Schnaittach - Betz stone " and " Neuhaus- Pegnitz " to choose from, the latter of which eventually came to execution. 1874, the project was approved. After only three years of construction could be opened to the section Nuremberg - Nennslingen the link between Nuremberg and Bayreuth on 15 July 1877. On August 15, 1878, the extension Nennslingen - Marktredwitz followed. The section Marktredwitz - Schirnding was again a year later - commissioned - November 20, 1879.

However, the continued construction to Bohemia was delayed for the time being. Cause was a dispute over the exact routing. Since in the Community station Eger between the Royal Bavarian State Railways, the Royal Saxon State Railways, the Emperor Franz Joseph Railway and the Buštěhrad Railway, the costs were calculated on the number of leading- routes, the Royal Bavarian State Railways were keen to avoid a further distance in Eger. Later on, the costs were determined by the number of axles of trains and so it was decided later but against Lazne station and built the route continues towards Eger. The last part of Schirnding - Eger of the whole compound was finally opened to traffic on November 1, 1883.

The first single-track line was extended 1898-1899 between Nuremberg and Marktredwitz to a second track and re-released in 1901 for rail traffic.

After the Second World War, the section lying in Czechoslovakia went over to the Czechoslovak State Railways ( ČSD ) compensation.

Bridge Renewal in Pegnitztal

The German railway plans to replace the Pegnitztal 23 listed bridges by new buildings since the previous steel Fachwerküberbauten have reached the end of its life. The new buildings are planned for the better insertion into the landscape as steel composite bridges with recessed bridge abutments. The cost is estimated at 100 million euros. A citizens' initiative is committed to preserving the historic steel truss bridges.

Future electrification of the line

The route is in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan as Project No. 16 (ABS Nuremberg - Marktredwitz - Reichenbach / D / CZ border ( - Prague) ), and set to be electrified by 2018. The cost for the overall project are given by the federal government with 460 million euros.

With the electrification of the line traffic is to offer on the lines of Nuremberg - be improved Simmelsdorf - Hüttenbach / Neuhaus - Neunkirchen. For this, the BEG, 2008 in cooperation with the Bavarian Ministry of Transport, give the VGN and DB a study; with a result is expected in the first half of 2009.
