Oakland Park is a city in Broward County in the U.S. state of Florida with 41 363 inhabitants ( 2010). The geographic coordinates are: 26.17 ° North, 80.15 ° West. The metropolitan area has a size of 17.9 km ². Oakland Park got its name from the first settlers on the basis of the massive oak trees that stood along the Middle River.

Geography

Oakland Park is located about 25 km north of Miami. Adjacent municipalities are Tamarac, Lauderdale Lakes, Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors.

History

The first inhabitants who settled here permanently, was the family " Whidby " who moved from Georgia to Florida in 1901. By 1918, more families, mostly farmers who were settled here came. 1923, the land was divided into plots. On this occasion they celebrated a huge barbecue, probably the largest of its time. This barbecue is also today still mentioned in the history books. 1925, a group of European investors, mainly nobles, initiated by the Earl and Countess of Lauderdale ( Earl and Countess of Lauderdale ), to found the city " Floranada " as a holiday paradise. The population density was 2537.6 inh. / Km ². 62.6 % of the population were white, 25.6% African American, 0.3% Native American and 2.0% of Asian Americans. 6.0% were members of other ethnic groups and 3.5% in different ethnic groups. 25.6 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 18.6 % of all households lived in 27.4 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 51.0 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.35 persons and the average family size is 3.10 people.

22.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 29.5% were 20-39 years old, 33.3 % were 40-59 years old and 14.8 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 39 years. 53.5 % of the population were male and 46.5 % female.

The average annual income was $ 44,470, while 15.0 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 66.52 % of the population spoke Spanish 18.16% and 15.32 % had a different mother tongue.

In Miami, there are the " Barry University " ( approximately 5,700 students) and the " Miami -Dade Community College " with about 25,300 students.
