History

The history of the name there is a fun saga that may contain a grain of truth. Thus, to have existed in the area in the 9th century a nunnery called High Husen. In the 10th century the nuns fled before the invading Hungary to the Austrian. A chest with their treasures and relics buried them. Years later came an ox while plowing on the wooden box. The joy was great at the site was built a little later the monastery Ochsenhausen.

The story Ochs Stockhausen is closely associated with the former Benedictine imperial abbey Ochsenhausen. The first church was consecrated in 1093. 1391 Ochsenhausen, which previously belonged to the monastery of St. Blaise, an independent abbey. The monastery church was built in the years 1489 to 1495 under Abbot Simon Lange Berger, from 1615 to 1618 was carried out under Abbot John Lang, the new building of the convent building, from 1783 to 1789 were the last Abbot Romuald Weltin the Library Hall and the Convention Hall added.

1495 awarded the title of a free imperial abbey. In 1501 raised their tenant-farmers from 38 villages armed against the monastery and reached in 1502 an improvement in their fiefs conditions. That might have been the reason why the peasant wars in 1525 there have not caused major damage. Also succeeded his prelates Gerwick Blarer to prevent the introduction of the Reformation in this field. In the course of secularization taking possession of the place and monastery Ochsenhausen by Imperial Count Franz Georg von Metternich - Winneburg - Beilstein on February 20, 1803 was a patent on all subjects. On June 30, 1803, Emperor Franz II the Imperial Count the personal dignity of Prince and raised Ochsenhausen the Principality. In connection with the formation of the Confederation of the Rhine in 1806, the area was constitutionally to the Kingdom of Württemberg. 1825 Metternich sold his possessions there for 1.2 million guilders to Württemberg.

1950 Ochsenhausen received city rights. In the course of municipal reform in Baden- Württemberg, the previously independent municipalities Reinstetten were ( on December 1, 1971 ) and incorporated Mittelbuch (1 January 1975) after Ochsenhausen. Since the early 1980s, the city center was renovated and adapted to modern needs.
