Origin and Meaning

The origin of the name is not finally resolved:

  • Scandinavian: common word root with Olaf and today still popular in Iceland Ólafur name and Óleifr The meaning of the name is a descendant of the ancestor. Germanic names were extremely diverse, and only about 4 in 1,000 people had the same first name. Óláfr, Oleifr, Olver, Olvar and Olbhur in England were different spellings with the same meanings. In Old Icelandic Landnámabók ( Conquest book, book of the settlement of Iceland 870-930 ) mention the 17 variants of the name Oliver.
  • Old High German: from Alfhari / Althir The meaning of the syllables is then alf = Elf / Alb / small creatures of nature hari = army / warrior. In Beowulf a Ælfhere is mentioned by the shield Willingen, in Waldere the Ælfhere as the father of Waldere.

With the Norman conquest of England in 1066 from France, probably the French name with Olaf or Oleifr Oliver was merged. In the Middle Ages, around the year 1075 to 1100, the name was Europe by the shape of Olivier, a historically non-secured paladin or knight and friend of Charlemagne, known in the Chanson de Roland ( probably April 2 * 747 † January 28 814).
