Joseph Oliver (politician)

Joseph Oliver (* 1852 in Erie ( Ontario); † January 8, 1922 in Toronto ) was from January 1908 to January 1910 the 34th mayor in Toronto, Canada.

Biography

Born 1852 in Erin (Ontario ), Oliver lived in Toronto since he was three years old. He worked in Holzfällgewerbe. In 1885 he was elected to the local school board, in 1895 and 1901 in the Toronto City Council. In 1908 and 1909 he stood in front of Toronto as mayor.

Occurrences in Oliver's term of office

In December 1908 Joseph Oliver gave the long-distance runner TJ McCaughey a message to the Mayor George Brinton McClellan of New York on the way and received from McClellan confirmation that McCaughey, who wanted to challenge other athletes such as Tom Longboat or Dorando Pietri with this action, had delivered the letter on foot in record time.

In March 1909 Joseph Oliver was asked about his opinion on dealing with offensive plays and shows. He gave the statement from, in such an event, the theater was to revoke the license immediately: Just as soon as the wrong show Has Made its character known, stop it, and take away the license from theater.
