Bert Wemp

Bert Sterling Wemp (* 1889 in Tweed, Ontario, † February 5, 1976 ) was a Canadian journalist and 42nd mayor of Toronto.

Wemp grew up in the Toronto district of Cabbagetown. In 1905 he began as an editor at the Toronto Telegram newspaper. During World War II he served in the 218th Squadron of the Royal Naval Air Service and was the first Canadian military Distinguished Flying Cross. During the Second World War, he was a foreign correspondent. 1921 and 1922 he was elected to the school board and was vice president of the Finance Committee. During his tenure, he pushed through that the mobile classrooms were replaced by school building. 1924-25 he was elected to the city council and was in the years 1927, 1928 and 1929 Member of the Audit. From January 1930 to January 1931 was Wemp mayor of Toronto. After his term he returned to Toronto Telegram as an editor back. He died at the age of 86 to emphysema.
