John Sewell

John Sewell ( born 1940 in Toronto, Ontario ) is a Canadian politician, publicist of works on local and historical issues and was from 1 December 1978 to 30 November 1980, the 58th mayor of Toronto. In 2005, Sewell was awarded the Order of Canada.

Sewell grew up in the Toronto District The Beaches and studied, among other things English at the University of Toronto literature. In 1961 he obtained his degree in it. Politically active Sewell was the first time in 1966, when he fought with a population against forced dispossession and leveling of the working class. He was elected to the City Council in 1969 and distinguished himself during this time in the reform wing of the Council. In the mayoral elections in 1978, the right wing was divided and shared the votes between David Paul Smith and Tony O'Donohue on. Sewell benefited from and was able to unite the majority on a with less than 50 % of the vote. During his tenure, he was often described by the media as radical. He established himself as a leading critic of the Toronto police, who, in his opinion, the population increased accountability was guilty. He was a champion for the rights of gays. Although he was able to gain different political wings for himself, he lost despite increase in votes the mayoral elections on November 10, 1980 against the conservative politicians Art Eggleton. In 1981 he was elected to the City Council, for whom he worked until 1984.
