Edward Frederick Clarke

Edward Frederick Clarke ( born April 24, 1850 in Bailieborough, County Cavan, Ireland, † March 3, 1905 in Toronto ) was a Canadian journalist, politician and the 26th Mayor of Toronto.

Edward Clarke was the son of Irish Richard Clarke and emigrated in 1864 after the death of his father across Ontario. He went first as a printer in the teaching of the Toronto newspaper The Globe and later worked at The Toronto Mail - both papers merged later for The Globe and Mail. In 1872 he was one of the leading figures during a strike of the printers. In 1884 he married Charlotte Elizabeth Scott. In the years 1886-1894 he represented Toronto in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and was in the years 1896-1904 and 1904-1905 member of the Canadian House of Commons. From January 1888 to January 1892 he held the office of Mayor of Toronto. Clarke was a member of the Conservative Party of Canada. He was also director of the Life Insurance Company Excelsior Life Insurance Company.
