James Edward Smith (Toronto)

James Edward Smith ( born December 25, 1831 in London, † 9 March 1892 in Toronto ) was a Canadian politician and from January 1867 to January 1869 the 17th mayor of Toronto. Smith emigrated in 1841 with his family from England to Toronto from. He was a director of a UK life insurance company. Side political career began with the election to the City Council in 1857. He represented the ward of St. John's and served as a councilor until 1870. 1867 he was appointed by the Council to the mayor and held the office two years held.
