George Reginald Geary

George Reginald Geary ( born August 12, 1873 in Strathroy, Ontario, † April 30, 1954 in Toronto ) was a lawyer, politician and the 35th Mayor of Toronto.

George Geary attended the private school Upper Canada College and then studied law at the University of Toronto. In 1896 he finished his studies with a degree. Soon after, grew his interest in politics. In 1904 he became a school representative; in the years 1905 to 1907 Geary was a town councilor. He was then the Province of Ontario's Advisory Board. In 1908, he applied to become mayor of Toronto, but was thwarted by Joseph Oliver. Two years later he was able to say in the election and held the mayor's office in January 1910 he held until January 1912. During his tenure, he promoted the plans to rebuild the port.

On January 7, 1915, he was recruited by the Canadian armed forces as a soldier and served during the First World War. He was awarded the Military Cross and was awarded by the French Government the Cross of the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre. On 24 March 1919, he left the army.

In 1925 he was elected as a member of the Conservative Party as a member of the House and held that office until 1935. In the cabinet of Prime Minister Richard Bedford Bennett, he was from 14 August to 22 October 1935 21 Minister of Justice of Canada. In the same year he became a member of the Canadian Privy Council.

Geary died in 1954 at the age of 80 and was buried in St. James Cemetery.
