Hiram E. McCallum

Hiram Emerson McCallum ( born August 14, 1899 in Caledon East, † 13 January 1989) was the 49th mayor of Toronto.

The family of Hiram McCallum moved in 1901 from Caledon East in the former Peel County to Toronto where he attended school. In 1918 he was hired at the newspaper Farmer's Sun and soon became the commercial manager. He moved to Ontario Press and founded his own company in 1931, which specialized in advertising prints. In the years 1941-1943 he was elected to the City Council of Toronto and was from 1943 to 1948 a member of the Audit Committee. Subsequently, he was from 1948 to 1951 mayor of the city. He became the head of the Canadian National Exhibition, and was a member of the City Planning Commission, which he chaired in 1961 /62. McCallum was a member of several sporting clubs and was in the Orange Order. Hiram McCallum was married to Margaret McCallum, with he had a daughter.
