John George Bowes
John George Bowes (* 1812 () in Clones, Ireland;? † May 20, 1864 in Toronto ) was a Canadian politician and from January 1851 to January 1853 for the first time Mayor of Toronto; January 1861 to January 1864 a second time.
Bowes emigrated in 1833 from from Ireland and was hired by his stepbrother in York as a merchant. In 1838 he opened his own shop and soon made a name for himself as a successful businessman. 1850 began his political career with his election to the City Council, a year later he was elected by the council to the mayor. During this first tenure, he was involved in a scandal in which it was accused of having unlawfully enriched in the proceeds of the railway company Simcoe & Lake Huron Union Railroad. In 1852 he was a founding member of the Toronto and Guelph Railway Company, of which he was also president. In 1854 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the provinces of Canada as a representative of Toronto. In 1856 he was appointed for the second time in the office of Mayor by the Council.
John George Bowes was married and had nine children.
