William James Stewart

William James Stewart ( born February 13, 1889 in Toronto, Ontario, † September 18, 1969 ) was a Canadian politician, MP President of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and 43rd Mayor of Toronto.

William James Stewart was the son of Scotch-Irish refugees and grew up in Toronto. He was a member of the Runnymede United Church, Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge and the Ulster Orange Order. His first political office he won in 1924, when he was elected to the City Council. Until 1930 he remained in the city council and successfully applied as mayor. Its up to January 1935 lasting from January 1931 term of office was marked by the problems of the world economic crisis. As a leading figure of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario joined Stewart in 1937 by the city in the province of politics. After the 1943 elections, he was elected Speaker of Parliament; In 1945 he was re-appointed to do so. From 1951 until June 10, 1959, he was again a member of parliament and was there at different fora.
