Pilgrim's Route

The Norwegian pilgrimage ( Pilegrimsleden ) to Nidaros Cathedral from Oslo to Trondheim ( Nidaros ), and St. Olav's Way ( Olavsvegen ), was re-opened in 1997. In German, the name is St. Olaf is written. The pilgrimage is derived by King Olav II Haraldsson. The Holy King Olav was buried in 1030 in Nidaros. The Nidaros Cathedral was erected over his grave.

History of the pilgrimage destination

After attributed to him miracles Trondheim was for four centuries to a Christian place of pilgrimage. The Saints history and the pilgrimage that it brought was certainly a band in the Nordic monarchy. It is said that a wooden chapel was erected immediately after Olav's death and canonization after a year on August 3, 1031 on his grave. Approx. 1070 King Olav Kyrre put the Norwegian laid the foundation for today's Cathedral. He left the chapel replaced by a stone church ( 1090 ). As the first architect of the steadily developed in cathedral (now neo- ) gothic style, as a builder of Archbishop Øystein Erlendsson ( 1161-1188 ) is supplied. The Nordic pilgrimages to Nidaros actually consist of a route network of about 5000 km, of which 2000 km run in Norway. This cultural heritage is increasingly being developed for tourism for hikers from the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe. About every 20 km there is a marked age since the pilgrims cross farm as quarters for the night. The pilgrimage for believers then replaced the journey to Rome and met / corresponds to in its religious significance, the Camino de Santiago for French or Spanish.
