Stadiums and spectator numbers

Since the Football World Cup 2010 some teams in the Premier Soccer League have very modern stadiums that have been converted or newly built for the World Cup. An example of this are the Orlando Pirates, which discharges most home games in the Final Stadium FNB Stadium, Soccer City which used to be called and has a capacity of 94,700 seats. But despite the good infrastructure, the audience figures are rather low. In the 2009/2010 season the average attendance of the League was only an average of 7,500 spectators, since the World Cup this value has not increased markedly.

TV Marketing and Sponsorship

The Premier Soccer League is the financially strongest football league of the African continent. This is mainly due to television contract with the broadcasters SuperSport (pay- TV) and SABC ( free TV ), which assures the League 160 million euros per season. There are only six leagues, get the higher revenue.

Title sponsor of the League since 2007, Absa Bank, so the league officially called ABSA Premiership. From 1996 to 2007, the Castle Brewery ( owned by Kompania Piwowarska ) the official sponsor.

First Division

History

The First Division, and National First Division, the second highest professional class in South African football. It was just like the PSL played with the 1996/97 season for the first time.

Season 1996/97

In the season 1996/ 97, the NFD was divided into four groups. There were groups of Western Cape, Natal Eastern Cape, Northern and Southern. While in the group Western Cape and Natal, Eastern Cape played sixteen teams, passed the Northern and Southern groups of twenty-two teams. The four masters of the respective seasons played in a Relegationstunier the two climb places.

Season 1997-2004

A year later, the system of NFD has been changed. The four Stafeln were decimated to two. It was then for the first time from the two departments Coastal Stream with teams from the coastal region and the inland stream with teams from the hinterland. In the 1997/98 season both squadrons were still twenty teams from 1998, the squadron Coastal Stream of fourteen and sixteen teams from Season Inland Stream. The respective champions of two seasons went directly into the PSL, the last one or sometimes two to three Latter dismounted. In the 2003 /04 season had to dismount with regard to the restructuring in the summer of 2004, the six worst teams in a relay Coastal Stream and the eight worst teams in the domestic season stream.

Season 2004-2007

In the summer of 2004, the two squadrons were first combined into a national league and the league was known for a sponsor as Mvela Golden League. It consisted of sixteen teams. The master rose directly into the PSL, while the Second, Third and Fourth fought together with the penultimate of the PSL in a Relegationstunier for the last free place in the PSL. The last two teams respectively in the 2004/05 season the last four teams dismounted.

Season 2007-2011

From 2007, the League again consisted of the two divisions, the Coastal Stream with teams from the coastal region and the inland stream with teams from the hinterland. Each of the two leagues had eight participants. The winners of the two leagues played at the end of the season against each other and thus identified the first newly promoted to the Premier Division. The loser of this " finale " played with the two runners-up and the 15th Premier Division Relegation in a tournament for the last place in the top division.

Since the season 2011/12

According to league data, the system with two seasons was unattractive especially for sponsors. Therefore it was decided that two seasons with eight teams from the 2011/12 season back to a single-track league together. In addition, we limited the number of maximum allowable foreign players per club of formerly five to three and set a minimum number of South African players under 23. This is five players per club and is mainly based on the fact that so instead of many South African veterans who leave their careers often close in the First Division, young talents get match practice, which should provide the basis for a future strong national team. During the first table rises directly into the PSL, the Second- and third - playing together with the second-bottom of the PSL in a Relegationstunier for the last free place in the PSL.
