Province of Milan

The Province of Milan is a province in the Italian region Lombardy. Significant places besides the capitals Milan are Bollate, Cinisello Balsamo, Cologno Monzese, Legnano, Paderno Dugnano, Rho, Rozzano and Sesto San Giovanni.

Geography

The province has an area of 1,575 km ². It includes 134 municipalities and 3,075,083 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). With the founding of the Province of Monza and Brianza in 2004, the province of Milan lost 55 municipalities and approximately 850,000 inhabitants, in December 2009, a further five municipalities.

History

With the Peace of Constance in 1183 Milan was the duchy, which dominated the surrounding area. 1450 Milan fell to the noble family of Sforza. After the victory of Charles V. over Francis I in 1525 coincided with Northern Italy and Milan to the Spanish Habsburgs. 1714 was awarded the Peace of Rastatt Lombardy and its capital, Milan the Austrian Habsburgs. 1859 Lombardy fell to the House of Piedmont-Sardinia under Victor Emmanuel II

Economy

The Province of Milan with its capital Milan is the economically most important province of Italy. Of the 200 largest companies in the country have more than half their headquarters here Here you can find most publishers, advertising agencies, market research organizations and commercial companies in the country. 1910, the car manufacturer Alfa Romeo was founded (now part of the Fiat group ) in Milan. Another world famous company is the tire and cable manufacturer Pirelli.
