Quintana Roo

Quintana Roo is a state of Mexico with 1,135,309 inhabitants ( 2005).

Quintana Roo has an area of ​​50,212 km ² and Mexico joined as for the time being the last country on October 8, 1974. It was named after Andrés Quintana Roo state, a poet of freedom. Capital is the Chetumal lying on the border with Belize in the far south of the country. The largest and most famous city of Cancún, however, is in the far northeast.

Geography

Quintana Roo is elongated along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. In the south it is bordered by Belize, to the west by the states of Yucatán and Campeche. The land is flat and mostly covered with rain forests, whose density increases towards the south.

Until the founding of Cancún in the 1970s, Quintana Roo was the least populated state of Mexico, today he is the one with the highest population growth rate. History

Quintana Roo was until 1902 a part of the state of Yucatán and shares his story. The indigenous population is formed by the Mayas. The Maya populated Yucatán at least since the first century AD, later it came to expression of the Mayan civilizations with important city-states on the Yucatan. Spain conquered the territory in the 16th century, in the 19th century, the peninsula was part of the independent state of Mexico by Spain. The Mayan people trying to achieve their independence from Mexico until 1901 in the case of war in 1847, the uprising was put down by Mexican troops. Center of the resistance struggle was the city of Chan Santa Cruz, today Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
