René Monory

René Monory ( born June 6, 1923 in Loudun, † April 11, 2009 ) was a French politician of the UDF. Monory often held ministerial posts and was President of the French Senate.

Life

Monory without complete secondary schooling, worked as a car mechanic and therefore was nicknamed garagiste de Loudun, when he was elected in 1959 for the first time as mayor of his home town of Loudun. From 1968 to 1977, from 1986 to 2004 he was a member of the French Senate for Vienne. 1977 appointed Prime Minister Raymond Barre him as Minister of Industry, Commerce and Crafts, 1978 as Minister of Economic Affairs, a post he held until 1981, where his achievements is mainly the introduction of the national savings bank system SICAV. He was appointed as Minister of Education in the Civil Cabinet of Prime Minister Jacques Chirac on 20 March 1986. He held the office until the end of this government on 12 May 1988. 1992 to 1998 he was President of the French Senate. On his initiative, the construction of the Futuroscope of Poitiers returns.

Awards

He was awarded the Order of the Knight of the Legion of Honour. In 1997 he received the Grand Gold Medal with Ribbon for Services to the Republic of Austria
