Riohacha

Riohacha on the map of La Guajira

Riohacha is located in Colombia and is the capital of the northern Colombian province of La Guajira. The city has 167 865 inhabitants (as of 2005), situated on the Caribbean coast.

The city was founded in 1535 by Nicholas spring man and in 1544 became the capital of the province within the Viceroyalty of New Granada.

Riohacha is located directly by the sea. Fishing is one of the main sources of income of the regional economy. Upstream from the coast there are submarine natural gas reserves; therefore has the port for some years a natural gas terminal. Another economic factor is close to the Venezuelan border; this makes for a lively, sometimes illegal import and export traffic by land via the border town of Maicao.

Geography

Riohacha is just off the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The municipality is bordered to the east by Albania, Manaure and Maicao, on the west by Dibulla and on the south by Hatonuevo, Barrancas, Fonseca, Distracción and San Juan del Cesar.
