Tunja

Tunja [' tuŋxa ] is the capital of the province of Boyacá, Colombia. The city is located on a plateau on the western edge of the Eastern Cordillera at an altitude of about 2800 m. She is so - even before Bogotá - the highest city in Colombia.

Tunja is located approximately 150 kilometers northeast of the capital Bogotá and has (as of 2011 ) about 170,000 inhabitants. The city was founded on August 6, 1539 by the Spaniard Gonzalo Suárez Rendón from the existing for several centuries Muisca settlement " Hunza " out.

During the struggle for independence in the early 19th century Tunja was a stronghold of the revolutionaries. In the near Tunja it came in 1819 to the Battle of Boyacá.
