Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bologna

Located in Bologna Italy Archdiocese (Latin: Archidioecesis bononiensis, Italian: Arcidiocesi di Bologna ) is an Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Italy, based in Bologna.

History

The diocese of Bologna was founded in the 3rd century. Towards the end of the 4th century it became part of the ecclesiastical province of Milan and in the 5th century in the Ecclesiastical Province of Ravenna. During the conflict between the Empire and the Papacy in the Middle Ages, the bishops of Bologna have remained mostly loyal to the Pope.

On December 10, 1582 the Diocese of Bologna by Pope Gregory XIII was. raised to an archbishopric. Despite resistance of the former Metropolitan, the Archbishop of Ravenna, Pope Clement VIII in 1604, the decision of Gregory XIII. 1796 the French occupied the archiepiscopal territories and operated an anti-religious policy. After Carlo Oppizzoni could (1802-1855) convey in his 53- jährgen tenure, came to his death, and especially after the annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1859 again on anti-clerical sentiment. From 1859 to 1882 Carlo Luigi Morichini and Lucido Maria Parocchi were the archbishops Michele Viale - Prelà, Filippo Maria Guidi may not reside in the Archbishop's Palace. Giacomo Lercaro, Archbishop of Bologna from 1952 to 1968, was one of the most influential figures of the Second Vatican Council.

7 ( arch) bishops of Bologna later became Pope John X in the year 914, Pope Innocent VII (previously Cosma Migliorati ) 1404 Nicholas V ( Tommaso Parentucelli ) in 1447, Julius II ( Giuliano della Rovere ) 1503 Gregor XV. ( Alessandro Ludovisi ) 1621, Benedict XIV ( Prospero Lambertini Lorenzo ) in 1740 and most recently Benedict XV. ( Giacomo Della Chiesa ) 1914.

The archbishop is Metropolitan of the diocese of Faenza - Modigliana, Imola and the Archdiocese of Ferrara - Comacchio.
