San Vito lo Capo

San Vito Lo Capo is a municipality in the province of Trapani in Sicily region of Italy with 4457 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

The inhabitants living in an area of 59 km ². The community is located 36 km north-east of Trapani. The inhabitants live off tourism, fishing and the processing of marble. Until the 17th century the place was the seat of a Tonnara ( tuna fishing place). Districts are Macari and Castelluzzo.

Borders the following municipalities: Castellammare del Golfo and Custonaci.

History

The town's name comes from the sanctuary of San Vito. In the 13th century, the sanctuary was built on the site of a chapel. In the 16th century the chapel was extended. In 1952 the church became independent. Today the town is a popular seaside resort.
