Alcamo

Alcamo is a city in the province of Trapani in Sicily region of Italy with 45 095 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

The city is located 50 km east of Trapani and 66 km southwest of Palermo. The municipality covers an area of 130 km ². Alcamo is located on the SS113 from Palermo to Trapani and has a freeway connection to the A29 and a railway connection. The inhabitants live on agriculture, the wine industry and the reduction of travertine.

The neighboring municipalities are Balestrate ( PA), Calatafimi Segesta, Camporeale (PA ), Castellammare del Golfo, Monreale (PA) and Partinico (PA ).

History

In 1340 the Castle of Alcamo was built by the Ventimiglia family. From this time, the city developed. Previously, there was in place a station on the road Palermo - Siracusa, was Arab origin and was called Manzil Alqameh.

Personalities

The poet Ciullo d' Alcamo was born here. He wrote, among other things, 1231-1250 the poem Rosa fresca aulentissima, one of the first literary evidence in Italian. Even the football players Antonino Asta comes from Alcamo.
