Gibellina
Gibellina is a municipality in the province of Trapani in Sicily region of Italy with 4198 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).
Location and data
Gibellina is located 63 km south-east of Trapani at an altitude of 227 m. The municipality covers an area of 45 km ². The residents work almost exclusively in agriculture.
The neighboring municipalities are Calatafimi Segesta, Monreale (PA ), Poggio Reale, Salaparuta, Santa Ninfa, Salemi and Vita.
History
The city was founded in the 14th century. During a severe earthquake in Belice Valley on 15 January 1968, it was completely destroyed. Instead they rebuild was erected 11 km to the west a new city.
There was a modern, sober city from the drawing board, which is not comparable with the increased settlement patterns of Sicily. Regular streets are divided by small squares and green spaces. Along the wide streets are two -storey residential building in the row house building with garages and small front gardens.
Numerous well-known architects, sculptors and painters donated works of art for the places the new city. These included, for example, Rob Krier, Oswald Mathias Ungers, Pietro Consagra, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Guttuso and Joseph Beuys. Today Gibellina is the city with the highest density of modern art in Italy.
The concept of the rebuilt city was never really accepted by the residents. Some parts of the city are no longer inhabited. Many monuments and works of art have expired.
Attractions
The remains of the old city and the new city Gibellina Vecchia Gibellina Nuova lie in a straight line 11 km by road and 18 km from each other.
Gibellina Vecchia
Part of the ruins of Gibellina was buried by the artist Alberto Burri under a thick layer of white cement. Walk cuts through the ancient streets give an idea of the narrowness of the original city. Gibellina Nuova
The star of Gibellina is a large, star-shaped gate, which was built in 1980 by Pietro Consagra on the access road to Gibellina.
