Gibellina

Gibellina is a municipality in the province of Trapani in Sicily region of Italy with 4198 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Gibellina is located 63 km south-east of Trapani at an altitude of 227 m. The municipality covers an area of 45 km ². The residents work almost exclusively in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Calatafimi Segesta, Monreale (PA ), Poggio Reale, Salaparuta, Santa Ninfa, Salemi and Vita.

History

The city was founded in the 14th century. During a severe earthquake in Belice Valley on 15 January 1968, it was completely destroyed. Instead they rebuild was erected 11 km to the west a new city.

There was a modern, sober city from the drawing board, which is not comparable with the increased settlement patterns of Sicily. Regular streets are divided by small squares and green spaces. Gibellina Vecchia
