Seán Doherty (Roscommon politician)

Seán Doherty ( born June 29, 1944 during Boyle, County Roscommon, † June 7, 2005 in Letterkenny, County Donegal) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician, Minister and President ( Cathaoirleach ) of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ).

Biography

Doherty was a member of the civil service and the Auctioneer and began his national political career as a candidate of the Fianna Fáil in 1977 with the first election for deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). He represented there at first the interests of the constituency of Roscommon - Leitrim and then from 1981 to 1989 the constituency of Roscommon.

In March 1980 he was appointed the Justice Department of Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Charles Haughey J. Minister of State and took over so called " junior ministers " to the end of Haugheys term of office on 30 June 1981 his first government post.

After re- election victory of Fianna Fáil Haughey appointed him on March 9, 1982 in his second government, which he served until the end of the term of office on 14 December 1982 after the defeat against the Fine Gael.

At the general election in 1989 he suffered a defeat, but was then a member of the group of public service and administrative member of the Senate. This elected him on November 1, 1989 his spokesman ( Cathaoirleach ). He held until his retirement from the Senate on January 22, 1992 This function.

Following 1992 he was again elected a member of the House and took there until 2002, the interests of the constituency of Longford - Roscommon. Last Doherty was on 4 December 1997 to 2002, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Enterprise and Transport.
